While Maharaj earned Junaid acclaim for his role as a determined journalist, his roots in theatre remain strong. His new project, Strictly Unconventional, is set to premiere on September 1, 2024, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Junaid Khan’s Play ‘Strictly Unconventional’
Strictly Unconventional delves into diverse relationship narratives, featuring Junaid in dual roles. One of his most challenging roles will see him portraying a transwoman, complete with a traditional churidar kameez and wig. This performance is anticipated to be notable for its depth and sensitivity.
Junaid Khan’s Theatre Background
Junaid Khan’s theatrical journey began in August 2017 with a standout role in Quasar Thakore Padamsee’s adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. He studied at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai before honing his craft at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. There, he performed in plays like Anna in the Tropics, Stags and Hens, and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Upon his return to Mumbai, Junaid appeared in Euripides’ Medea, directed by his sister, Ira Khan.
Reflecting on his theatre experience, Junaid has noted how it taught him to “feel and catch the light,” a skill he found invaluable during his film work.
